A native, warm-season perennial grass from the central U.S. tallgrass prairie, reaching 3–5 feet tall with bright green leafy stems and open reddish-purple seed panicles. Its deep, rhizomatous roots provide excellent soil stabilization, erosion control, and wildlife habitat. Blackwell is hardy, vigorous, disease-resistant, and adaptable to a wide range of soils, making it ideal for conservation plantings, livestock forage and hay, and wildlife cover. Plant in spring using a drill at 3–4 lbs per acre or broadcast at 6–8 lbs per acre.
